The most prominent religion in Bosnia Herzegovina is Islam (51% of the population). In Bosnia there are regions where government officials are of the majority religion. In Bosnia the largest religion is Islam, which is a universalizing and monotheistic religion. The government controls what the adherents to Islam in Bosnia can and cannot do. Local authorities sometimes restricted the right to worship of adherents in areas where they are in the minority. 43% of Bosnian and Herzegovinian muslims are non-denominational Muslims. During the campaign period, protection of religion freedom from the government has declined because of the indifference of some government officials and selective legal enforcement. Prior to this period, the Government implemented the State Law on Religious Freedonm to protect the rights of religious communities and create a government registry allowing them to establish legal status. Societal abuses and discrimination based on religious beleif and practice persisted. Younger believers who grew up in the post-communist period have more freedom to practie their religion and more access to religious education. The biggest conflict today is that the government is implenting new laws and practices for the religion. Also, people are facing major discrimination because of the religion they practice.
